Chapter 23
Esther needed to get outdoors as quickly as possible, embarrassment causing her face to flame. Favian had caught her off guard with his gift. It contained the most beautiful jewels she had ever seen. The jewels she kept hidden away at home had been her motherâs, but they paled in comparison to this. These extraordinary jewels had belonged to his beloved mother. King Favian cared enough to present them to her and find a way to assure her they had never belonged to Helena.
Favianâs touch on her skin and the kiss on her shoulder had left her wanting more. The heat in her face continued as she realized she would have let him continue kissing her had they not been interrupted. This Favian was nothing like the king people spoke of in Elbren. And when he smiled, her heart melted a little more. The slight dimple in his left cheek and his dancing eyes made her heart beat faster. Yes, if she could have this man, she could easily fall in love with him. She vowed to find the reason for his angry outbursts, and maybe she could help him see that not everyone in his kingdom was against him. He had more support than he realized if he would just choose to see it. Today Esther proudly walked on the kingâs arm to the chapel. Their friends followed them, whispering loudly. Esther had no desire to hear what they had to say.
Reaching the front steps of the chapel, the elderly priest met them and smiled down at the couple. Favian had chosen to avoid tradition in having the banns read, as there was not enough time. Elbren Kingdom often did things their own way, and today was no exception. The priest had agreed to perform the ceremony and bless the marriage, and Lord Ulrik was gone. This day was better than she had expected, with the exception of deeply missing her uncle. He should be with her on this day. She could not risk Favian discovering her true identity right now, and having the banns read would have surely given someone an opportunity to discover who she was.
The castle inhabitants joined them in the courtyard below the chapel steps to watch their king wed. Shouts of affirmation and love came from the crowd. Esther hoped she could be a queen they would truly love and be proud of.
After answering the priestâs questions, in which they both confirmed they were free to enter into marriage, their vows were simple. Favian pledged himself to Esther, then Esther did the same to Favian. For a moment, she let herself get caught in the dream. That she was promising herself and her future to the man standing beside her. A pang of guilt tore through her upon remembering her deceit and her belief that the king had a black heart. But Favianâs voice sounded strong and sincere.
Does he really mean every word? Could he really love me one day? How will I
